They were selling compromised food due to the blackout, fines, and seizures by the Nas in Catania.
#Catania
The Carabinieri of the NAS discovered that food products with compromised preservation due to frequent power outages in the province of Catania were still being sold. The NAS conducted a distribution network check to prevent harmful health consequences resulting from potential issues in maintaining the cold chain of perishable food products. Additionally, the traders allowed the spontaneous refreezing of frozen food items after the restoration of electrical power, which would lead to sudden bacterial proliferation.
During the check, the NAS found and seized over 3,500 packages of food products in a wholesale warehouse in the Catania area. Instead of being stored at cooled temperatures, these products were found to be stored at ambient temperatures well above 40 degrees Celsius.
In the refrigerated counters of a well-known retail chain, the NAS discovered hundreds of packages of frozen products that showed signs of prior thawing. As a result, these products were immediately seized and subsequently disposed of and destroyed as they were no longer suitable for human consumption.
