The Sicilian Symphonic Orchestra in concert in Ciminna with the soundtracks of John Williams.

One of the great summer events organized by the Municipality of Ciminna is the return of the Concert by the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra at the picturesque location of the San Vito Hill. The orchestra, under the direction of maestro Antonino Manuli, will perform the famous soundtracks of John Williams, a five-time Oscar winner for Best Original Score, for films that have become true cult classics such as Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and Star Wars. The concert is scheduled for tonight (July 28th) at 9pm.
This is not the first time that the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra performs in Ciminna. The last time was in 2019, before the pandemic, when the orchestra, under the direction of maestro Jacopo Sipari, performed a musical program by Tchaikovsky and a Concertino for 4 Trombones and String Orchestra by Dutch composer Jan Koetsier (1911/2006), played by the trombone section of the orchestra: Giuseppe Bonanno, Francesco Tolentino, Calogero Ottaviano, and Andrea Pollaci.
The concert is an opportunity to visit Ciminna, which boasts a cultural heritage developed between the 15th and 17th centuries, when many churches and convents were built, housing numerous valuable works of art. Today, approximately 15 out of the sixty built churches and convents remain, bearing witness to the prestige and role played by the town in the political, economic, and religious panorama of Sicily between the 15th and 18th centuries.
Ciminna has a strong connection to the world of cinema, as it is the hometown of director Martin Scorsese’s mother. In 1962, Luchino Visconti chose Ciminna to film some scenes for his movie “The Leopard”, transforming the town into a movie set and capturing the magical and evocative atmosphere of Sicily in the past. Forty-six years later, Nobel laureate Giuseppe Tornatore also filmed some scenes for his movie “Baarìa” in the square of San Vito, emphasizing the link between the film industry and the town of Ciminna.
“The appointment with the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra in the splendid setting of San Vito Square is renewed this year as well,” said Mayor Vito Filippo Barone. “It will be an evening dedicated to high-level music with the famous soundtracks of John Williams, known by many generations. This is an unmissable event that is successful every year.”
“In the summer events program,” added Francesca Leone, Councilor for Sports, Tourism, and Entertainment, “the regular appointment with the Symphony Orchestra could not be missing. We are focusing on high-level events to make Ciminna more attractive from a tourist point of view.”
