The program for the Mare colore dei Libri festival, which will take place in Marsala from Friday, August 4th to Sunday, August 6th, has been unveiled. Organized by Navarra Editore with the sponsorship of the Municipality of Marsala, the festival is mainly sponsored by the Comieco consortium and the Consortium for the Protection of Marsala Doc wine. This third edition will feature over 40 book presentations and cultural events, all free of charge.
The festival is also a book fair, which will take place along via Garibaldi from 5:30 pm to midnight, featuring the presence of 16 independent publishers from the Italian cultural scene, including Sellerio and Navarra Editore itself. The literary meetings will be held in the central piazza della Repubblica and in the nearby streets via della Gancia and piazza Filippo Milazzo Maggio, as well as in the monumental complex of San Pietro and on the terrace of the Pascasino Institute. These locations will have suggestive names related to literature during the festival, such as Leonardo Sciascia port, Rosaria Giaconia dock, Andrea Camilleri wharf, Italo Calvino cove, Elsa Morante bay, and Gianni Rodari gulf. The historic center of Marsala will welcome a large audience, who will be able to browse books at the various stands of the publishers, as well as meet writers and artists engaged in book presentations and other cultural activities, including a series of exhibitions. The artistic direction of the festival is curated by publisher Ottavio Navarra, supported by journalist Daniele Ienna, Paolo Navarra, and Michaela Di Caprio.
“Rebirth will be the keyword of this year’s edition,” explains Ottavio Navarra. “With the support of the power of books, we want to celebrate two anniversaries and develop related reflections: the birth of Marsala wine, 250 years after the arrival in the city of the English entrepreneur John Woodhouse; and the 80th anniversary of the events of 1943: from the bombings in Marsala and other Sicilian cities to Operation Husky and the subsequent Armistice.”
Specifically, on Friday, August 4th, at 9 pm in piazza della Repubblica, there will be the premiere screening of the documentary “Marsala May 11, ’43. Tales of War and Rebirth,” curated by Daniele Ienna, filmed and edited by Sergio Martino. This will be followed by a conversation on “Those Post-war Years” with Professor Rosa Martinez. There will also be a conversation on “Young People and Memory” with representatives of the Nonovento association. The book “The Landing. Eighty Years Ago, the Allies in Sicily. Stories of Characters, Soldiers, and Families,” curated and published by the daily newspaper La Repubblica, will be presented, with the participation of Marco Patucchi, editor of Repubblica Palermo.
On Saturday, August 5th, at 9 pm in piazza della Repubblica, there will be an event titled “Marsala, a Wine to Read. A Journey through History, Taste, and Literature,” featuring discussions and references to the combination of wine and literature. The panel will include professors Giovanni Alagna and Nicola Trapani, and Professor Antonella Chinnici. It will be moderated by Roberta Urso, regional delegate for Sicily for the National Association of Women in Wine.
There will also be space dedicated to children’s literature, with workshops and guided readings, all coordinated by Matilde Treno.
During the festival, among the many present writers will be Irene Chias, Gaetano Savatteri, Santo Piazzese, and Umberto Lucentini. On Friday, August 4th, at 7 pm, there will be a meeting with Irene Chias for the presentation of her book “Rocchesante,” published by Laurana Edizioni. This will be followed, at 8 pm in piazza della Repubblica, by a meeting with Gaetano Savatteri for the presentation of his book “Le Siciliane,” published by Laterza.

The author will be joined by lawyer Fabio Trizzino. Afterwards, at 9 pm, writer Santo Piazzese will present his book “Sei casi per Lorenzo La Marca,” published by Sellerio. At 10 pm, Mauro Di Domenico will present “When You Meet a Legend. Story of a Friendship with Ennio Morricone,” with a concluding performance.
Among the festival’s featured actors, the Nonovento association will present the reading exhibition “Vagiti essenziali,” and the EticoLogica association will award the winners of the second edition of the literary competition “Narrazioni Etiche.” The festival will also provide an opportunity to get a preview of the Matabbia Festival, curated by the Banca Marsalese della Memoria.
The Mare colore dei Libri program also includes a series of exhibitions. At the Lilibeo Club, there will be “Immersioni,” which features artwork by Antonella Cirrito made from recycled plastic and video installations. This exhibition is a partnership between Mare colore dei Libri and the recently concluded Torto festival, whose artistic director, Salvatore Nocera, will be present in Marsala. Another exhibition at the Lilibeo Club focuses on the bombings of Marsala in 1943, featuring reproductions of photographs and documents from the Municipal Library and the Historical Archive of Marsala. At Palazzo VII Aprile, there will be “Il Marsala,” a display of historical labels from the private collection of Dr. Mario Arini, and “Blu Carpet,” the official photo set of the festival, curated by Salvatore Sinatra. The program of Mare colore dei Libri also includes a reflection on the promotion of reading at the Otium Social Library, with a focus curated by the Network of Literary Festivals of the province of Trapani. There will also be in-depth discussions dedicated to the Marsala poet Rosaria Giaconia, Elsa Morante, and Italo Calvino, the latter with a conversation curated by Francesco Vinci, who is also participating in the festival as an author with the book “Lo sciopero delle mezze stagioni” (The Strike of the Half-Seasons). The program also includes the presentation of “Sciara. Prima c’agghiorna,” by and with Luana Rondinelli and I musicanti di Gregorio Caimi (Navarra Editore), with the extraordinary participation of actress Ester Pantano.
