The reading room of Monreale’s public library will be computerized.

The co-programming project initiated a year ago by Councilors Fabrizio Lo Verso and Letizia Sardisco within the framework of the “Local Pact for Reading” had highlighted, among the critical issues related to Monreale’s library service, the inadequacy of the equipment which did not allow to meet all the users’ needs. Therefore, together with local associations, the municipal administration had planned a series of interventions aimed at computerizing the rooms of the S. Caterina Library, ensuring that some would be provided with municipal funds and others with funds from external financing sources.

While waiting to know the outcome of the projects presented within the “Reading for All” Call for Proposals from CEPELL, which would allow the purchase of specific computer equipment for people with disabilities, the relevant departments have purchased a new Full HD projector with screen, two speakers with stands, a mixer, and microphones, which will enhance the use of the Rocco Campanella room, facilitating the realization of cultural initiatives and co-design processes.

Additionally, the reading room will be equipped with a complete PC workstation, including a webcam, headphones, monitor, speakers, and microphone, which will be used by volunteers from Proloco Monreale who are performing civil service on behalf of the Municipality of Monreale. They will work on creating an interactive map of the city to be presented to tourists, as well as by all library users for any research or reading of scientific magazines.

In the coming days, a multimedia interactive whiteboard will be installed for conducting lessons and communicating with users. Finally, two more PC workstations will be provided to the Historical Archives and library staff to initiate the process of digitizing the existing book collection.

“Together with local associations, we are committed to making the municipal library a meeting place and gathering point for all generations, especially for young people,” say Councilors Lo Verso and Sardisco. “Within the next year, we aim to significantly increase the number of accesses to the service with further improvements to the facility and book collection.”
