“They are trying to close the stable when the cattle have already escaped.” This is what Michele Catanzaro, leader of the Democratic Party in the Sicilian Regional Assembly, says regarding the provision contained in the national government’s “Omnibus Decree” which sets limits on the flight booking algorithm for the islands. “If I were President Schifani, instead of applauding, I would be outraged by this mocking provision that comes just before August when, as known, the tourist season is already planned and ticket prices start to decrease. The President of the Region should rather take action to establish a cap for residents and individuals with stable economic relations with the major islands, as well as a reimbursement fund based on indicators for addressing the disadvantages of insularity and territorial continuity,” Catanzaro concludes.

The regional secretary of the Democratic Party in Sicily, Anthony Barbagallo, also commented on the issue. “There is no halt to expensive flights to Sicily and for Sicilians. That must be clear. On the contrary, the government’s provision consolidates a method that effectively keeps the costs high, contributing to maintaining the average ticket prices at a higher level. If there will be a halt, it will only affect prices that are already high and exceed 200% of the average. It is no surprise that the President of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, is the first to praise the government’s mocking provision, while disregarding his fellow citizens and instead praising the politicians from Rome who caused the problem. We believe that action should be taken, particularly on the system that has allowed a true cartel of airlines to dictate terms on flights to and from Sicily without any fear due to the lack of adequate controls,” explains Barbagallo, who is also the leader of the Democratic Party in the Transport Committee of the Chamber of Deputies.
