The paragliding accident: the pilot dies, the friend rescued by helicopter

The victim of today’s paragliding accident, MA, was 54 years old and experienced, originally from Catania. The injured woman, a fifty-year-old friend of the man, from Agrigento, residing in Gallodoro, is hospitalized in red code for a serious polytrauma at the Cannizzaro hospital in Catania. It was transported to the Etna hospital by the Drago 146 helicopter of the Flight Department of the Catania brigade, which intervened on a report from the Messina operations room.

The particular orography of the land, into which the paraglider crashed, made it necessary for the helicopter to intervene to rescue the woman, who was brought on board, together with a 118 doctor, with the aid of the winch. According to a first hypothesis, the paraglider, launched from Monte Venere, in Castelmola, would have collided with high voltage electric wires which are reported and known. In recent years, another paraglider had fallen in the area, but in that case the pilot was saved.

On the accident that took place today in Castelmola, near Taormina, the president of the Etna Fly school, Gabriele D’Arrigo, specifies that the pilot Alessandro Melfa is not an instructor, but an assistant, and the passenger, a friend of his, Maria Jose Isaia , also a pilot.
