The Nile Fever in Palermo: Patient, 54, arrived at Cervello a few days ago

A 54-year-old patient in Palermo has been confirmed to have the West Nile Virus (WNV). The confirmation came from tests performed at the Polyclinic in Palermo, which is responsible for monitoring arbovirus infections in Sicily. The patient, who already had an underlying condition, developed a neuro-invasive form of West Nile Fever. The regional center of the university hospital conducts laboratory tests to confirm suspected cases of arthropod-borne infections in Sicily. These include not only West Nile Fever but also Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya, and other locally acquired or imported arboviral diseases. Last summer and autumn, the Polyclinic diagnosed five human cases of West Nile Fever, mostly in people from the Trapani province, one of which was fatal.
