The Mazzarrà Sant’Andrea landfill is now a source of concern: there is a risk of collapses and the release of biogas.
#Messina
During the meeting of the Provincial Committee for public order and safety held on August 3rd, it was revealed that in the former Zuppà landfill, there are concentrations of biogas higher than the allowed percentage in normal conditions, as well as significant amounts of uncollected biogas waste that create a highly flammable environment. The curator of the bankrupt company Tirrenoambiente, Angelo Vitarelli, warned of the imminent danger of collapse of the waste pile, which is partially covered by a cap, noting that there are daily landslides and the failed company lacks the necessary resources for effective interventions. Due to the seriousness of these circumstances and the risk they pose to public and private safety, Prefect Cosima Di Stani has urged the relevant entities and administrations to take urgent action to ensure the safety of the site. As a precautionary measure, the competent municipal authorities have been instructed to prohibit access to the entire landfill site, except for personnel involved in the necessary gas collection operations, and to restrict access to the adjacent roads until the required urgent gas collection interventions are carried out.
