“The Crosses of Pino Puglisi,” the street art installation in Palermo.
#Palermo
“The Crosses of Pino Puglisi” is the title of Angelo Crazyone’s street art piece in Valdesi, precisely in the parking area of Via Saline, to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of his murder. Blessed Pino Puglisi, barbarically killed on September 15, 1993 in Brancaccio, served as the vicar at the Church of Maria Santissima Assunta in Valdesi from 1967 to 1970. It was for this reason that the mural was strongly desired by those who were born and raised in this neighborhood, including the Regional Sicilian Vice President for Productive Activities, Edy Tamajo.
“Beyond my political role, my approach to this artwork comes from someone who exclusively grew up and lives in that neighborhood. This artwork does not want to be just one of the many murals present in the Sicilian capital. It aims to be a memorial for all the people of the Valdesi neighborhood who still remember Don Pino Puglisi and his spiritual and social work. For many years, certain politicians have tried to appropriate some icons who fought against the mafia and criminal activity. I believe that Don Pino Puglisi was a profound innovator of the church and our Palermo. His dedication, his continuous hands-on approach should serve as an example for everyone, without political affiliations or slogans. I will continue to repeat that Palermo, like Sicily, needs development and truth.”
The project, sponsored by the Sicilian Regional Assembly, was supported by Ars Mediterranea, Fondazione Strano, Domina Zagarella Sicily, Confraternita Maria Santissima Assunta – Valdesi, L’ombelico del mondo, and Proloco Mondello.
