The Bishop of Cefalù: First steps towards the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine.

#Palermo
A new Medicine faculty connected to the Giglio hospital in Cefalù (Palermo) has been proposed by Bishop Giuseppe Marciante in his homily for the feast of the Savior, the city’s patron saint. The project is said to be in an advanced stage of discussion, and the Bishop expressed his belief that it is beginning to take its first steps. He also mentioned ongoing discussions with regional politics, which gave him the impression that there is a strong willingness to move forward with the initiative.

Moreover, the Bishop emphasized the shortage of doctors and nurses, stating that it confirms an actual emergency. He called for action, stating that it is not enough to only speak about the issue, but that it is necessary to witness a new scientific, cultural, healthcare, and economic spring.

In his words, the Bishop also referred to an intervention by the Diocese of Cefalù in Obala, Cameroon, where a “school of trades” is being created to train young Africans. He critically discussed the policies regarding migration, arguing that the commonly used phrase “let’s help them in their own countries” hides forms of exploitation and neocolonialism. He emphasized that the Church has been the only institution for centuries to assist and support people in their own lands, treating them as dignified and free individuals rather than colonizers.
