Shipwreck off Lampedusa: girl dies, eight missing

53 migrants, including two children, were traveling in an iron boat from Sfax, Tunisia to Lampedusa when the boat sank near the coast. Two young fishermen, Salvatore and Giuseppe Del Volgo, noticed the migrants and rescued two Ivorian teenagers. The Coast Guard rescued 43 survivors from countries including Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Konakry, and Mali. Tragically, a 2-year-old girl died on the rescue boat. Eight people, including two children, remain missing. This incident adds to the recent influx of migrants to Lampedusa, which has seen eight landings totaling 372 migrants.
