Seven injured Salesians returning to San Gregorio Housing after Palermo-Catania accident, out of danger.
All seven injured in yesterday’s (Sunday, April 21) accident on the Palermo-Catania highway are out of danger. This is what is learned from a statement released by the Salesian Salesian Inspectorate of Sicily San Paolo. “From the information we receive from hospitals, where the injured are hospitalized, no one is in danger,” the social communication office of the Salesians Don Bosco of Sicily announces. “Obviously – add the Salesians – we are closely following the situation.”
From the statement it emerges that the main hypothesis, on the causes of the accident, is the puncture of a tire of the minibus that transported the group, returning to Catania after a meeting in Palermo, the Feast of young people of the Salesian Movement. “A minibus of the San Gregorio Community Housing in Catania – the note reads – had a bad accident on the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway in the direction of Catania between the exits of Catenanuova and Agira (but the kilometer indicated by Anas, 147.300, is located in the section between Dittaino and Agira). According to the first findings of the highway police, the cause of the accident is related to the sudden explosion of a tire”, after which “the vehicle lost stability and skidded off the road.”
On board the minibus were an educator, two civil service volunteers and six boys staying at the Community. Rescue operations started immediately, the nine occupants were transported to hospitals in Catania, Enna and Caltanissetta. The injured held in hospitals are seven, three adults and four minors. Two of them were flown to Catania by helicopter. According to the note, released late yesterday, “from the first information collected by the Superior of the Salesians, Fr. Giovanni D’Andrea, in agreement with the managers of the Community Housing, it is known that the occupants of the minibus have contusions and wounds treated with stitches. They remain under medical observation to have a more defined clinical picture”.
“In addition to the great fright – explains Fr. Giovanni D’Andrea – and concern, it seems that the situation is under control. On behalf of the entire Salesian community of Sicily, we thank the highway police, the firefighters and the medical personnel who provided assistance to our youth. We rely on the protection of Mary Help of Christians so that everything can return to normal. I invite you to pray for this.”
