Serious error in the recounting of Palermo rape in Avanti popolo

The Venice Manifesto for Respect and Gender Equality in Information is a fundamental point for us and the result of years of struggle and the precious work of the Italian National Press Federation, the Rai journalist union, and the GiULiA Journalists’ Association. It aims to recognize the crucial role of information and media in addressing gender-based violence. Members of the Democratic Party, Ouidad Bakkali and Cecilia D’Elia, commented on a recent television program that exposed a rape survivor to messages from her attackers and anonymous citizens, leading to distorted and intolerable portrayals of the victim. They expressed concern alongside over 300 journalists, intellectuals, writers, activists, and survivors in a letter to Rai and Agcom. The Democratic Party also proposed an amendment promoting respectful narratives for survivors and avoiding victim-blaming in the media.
