Scorching heatwave engulfs Sicily: Fires ravage Corleone, Sambuca, and San Cono

The Unified Air Operations Center (COAU) of the Civil Protection department has received 17 requests for aerial intervention to combat forest fires. The crews of the Canadair and helicopters of the State’s air fleet have been engaged in various regions of Italy, including Calabria, Sicily, Puglia, Campania, Lazio, Molise, and Basilicata. Thanks to their intensive work, 9 fires have been brought under control or extinguished so far. Water and fire retardant dropping activities will continue as long as the light conditions allow safe operations. In the areas of Palermo, Corleone, Monte Petroso, San Cono, and Agrigento, several hectares of Mediterranean vegetation have been destroyed, and agricultural farms and crops were also threatened.
