Schifani meets Health Minister at Cardiothoracic Surgery in Taormina, parents concerned about delays

The meetings between the Sicilian Region and the Ministry of Health regarding the future of the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Center in Taormina continue. The President Renato Schifani, along with the General Manager of the Department of Strategic Planning of the Health Department, Salvatore Iacolino, and the Chief of Staff of Palazzo d’Orleans, Salvatore Sammartano, met with Minister Orazio Schillaci. The focus of the meeting was the request for an exemption from the “Balduzzi decree,” which requires one facility for every 5 million inhabitants, as already in place in Veneto (with Verona and Padua), put forward by the Region on May 15th.

“We have noted – President Schifani states – the Ministry’s willingness to assess the sustainability of our proposal in terms of healthcare and economics. The procedure to ensure the presence of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Centers in Sicily to meet the health needs of the communities involved has therefore been initiated. Not just an extension, but an exemption would be a victory for the Region, with the concurrent revision of the hospital network. In any case – adds the Governor – if the timeframe for the exemption were to lengthen, the Ministry of Health has expressed the possibility of providing an additional extension of the service, which expires on July 31, to ensure continuity of care.”

The Parents Committee of patients of the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Center in Taormina has welcomed with joy the decision of the President of the Region, Renato Schifani, to finally request the exemption from the Ministry of Health for the definitive maintenance of the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Center in Taormina. “After numerous statements from the national Government indicating no issues with maintaining the two pediatric cardiac surgery centers in Sicily – the committee says – we were convinced that the process could finally move forward smoothly. However, up to this point, we only have partial information that once again places us in a state of apprehension, especially in the face of another extension.”
