CATANIA – Paintings and ceramics kept in regional and civic museums, sculptures and photographs by artists contemporaries depicting Sant’Agata and the feast that celebrates the cult of the patron saint of the Etna capital.
About twenty works exhibited in the exhibition “Agata.
From the Christian icon to the contemporary myth.
The treasures of the regional museums at the University Palace “ inaugurated in recent days at the central building of the University of Catania.

The exhibition is financed by the Sicilian Region through the Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity and was conceived and organized by the Superintendence for Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Catania in collaboration with the University (University museum system) and with the Ancient Mediterranean Oelle Foundation.

“Agata” is synonymous with sacredness and ritual, but also with art and citizenship, several complex and sometimes contradicting worlds, summarized in the exhibition halls through a few but exemplary testimonies.
Twenty works created between the 14th and 21st centuries tell the story of Agata’s life and death and her relationship with humanity: the paintings and ceramics of the museums of the Sicilian Region, the galleries of Palazzo Abatellis and Palazzo Bellomo, the Pepoli museums of Trapani, the Interdisciplinary one of Messina and that of Caltagirone Ceramics, the canvases and stones from the civic museum of Castello Ursino, from the Etna Archdiocese and from the University collections, together with the works of contemporary artists, photographs, sculptures, olfactory installations .
All in a single narrative context.

The works on display, the selection of which was curated by Carmelo Nicosia, are by Nicosia himself and by Carmelo Bongiorno, Giovanna Brogna Sonnino, Carmen Cardillo, Ursula Costa, Ezio Costanzo, Gaetano Gambino, Angelo Iodice, Egidio Liggera, Giovanna Lizzio, Nicola Pecoraro , Ivan Terranova, Anna Tusa, Aldo Zucco.
The installation “La fragranza2 is by Antonio Alessandria.
The exhibition will be open for free until 31 October 2022, from Monday to Friday from 9.30 to 13.30.
