Romeo and Luigi, two Canicattì entrepreneurs, murdered in Caltanissetta: Romanian defendant sentenced to 25 years.

The Assize Court of Caltanissetta, presided over by Roberta Serio, sentenced 31-year-old Romanian Florin Scurtu to 25 years for the double homicide of brothers Calogero and Filippo La Monaca. The prosecutor Stefano Strino had requested life imprisonment, but according to the court, the aggravating factor of cruelty that had been contested by the prosecution should not be attributed to the defendant.

The double murder of the two brothers from Canicattì, aged 76 and 74, took place on the evening of June 14, 2021 in contrada Deliella, in the territory of Caltanissetta. Scurtu, defended by lawyer Valentina Fiorenza, allegedly killed the two brothers with rocks due to issues related to pastures. According to investigators, he then attempted to burn their bodies. The victims’ sisters heard an explosion at the farm and alerted authorities. Scurtu was arrested by the carabinieri three months after the start of the investigation. He confessed to the double murder in front of the investigating judge, only to later retract his statement. He explained that he had made the confession out of fear. The sentence’s motivations will be deposited in 90 days. The Romanian shepherd’s lawyer has already stated that she will appeal the decision.
