Rising Traffic and Long Ferry Queues in Messina: Controesodo

The exodus from Messina is underway. As expected, today there were numerous vacationers’ cars lining up to board the ferries. Since the night and throughout the morning, there has been a steady flow of cars coming from Boccetta avenue and other highway junctions. Traffic police officers are stationed at the most critical intersections, especially at Boccetta and the road leading to the docks. Signage along the affected roads indicates the routes to reach both private and Bluferries’ docks. The municipality and the prefecture have implemented routes to prevent the return traffic from mixing with city traffic, dedicating the Liberty avenue to cars boarding the ferries. The wait time is about one hour but varies depending on the intensity of traffic. There is also heavy traffic on the highway with some queues at the toll booths, especially on the Messina-Palermo A/20, between Villafranca Tirrena and Messina, in the direction of Messina. In the late morning, only a few cars were lined up at the Tremestieri barrier on the Messina-Catania A/18, heading towards Messina.
