Rigged healthcare tenders in Catania, trial process for former councilor Razza and ten others

The judge Carlo Cannella has indicted eleven people in the proceedings stemming from an investigation by the carabinieri of the investigative unit of the provincial command of Catania on assignments within projects funded and approved by the Health department of the Sicilian Region, allegedly assigned to “predestined” individuals or relatives with specially prepared tenders and rigged exams. Among them is the former regional Health assessor and newly elected European parliamentarian for FdI Ruggero Razza, investigated for the biased freedom of choice of the contractor for appointing a professional for a project worth 10,000 euros. For the same type of crime charged, a sentence of acquittal was issued to the former regional Labor assessor, Antonio Scavone, who had resigned from the position of medical manager at the hospital in Catania where he worked. Also indicted are Ignazio Igo La Mantia, former president of the medical association, and Giuseppe Arcidiacono, medical manager of the Garibaldi hospital and member of Fdi who had run for mayor of Catania before withdrawing. Also indicted are: Alberto Bianchi, Filippo Di Piazza, Sebastiano Felice Agatino Ferlito, Rosalia Maria Leonardi, Eugenio Pedullà, Ernesto Guido Rapisarda, Francesco Lo Re, and Daniele Sorelli.

The judge also issued the verdict of the trial with the shortened procedure and sentenced Aldo Missale, former administrative director of the Order of Doctors of Catania, accused of corruption, to six years and eight months of imprisonment, and the doctor, Calogero Grillo, accused of bid rigging, to eight months, with the execution of the penalty suspended for the latter.

Missale was also sentenced to reimbursement to the civil parties, the hospital companies Policlinico and Garibaldi, the medical association, and a harmed party, to be liquidated in a separate session and setting a provisional payment of 30,000 euros each. Grillo will have to reimburse the University Hospital, to which he must pay a provisional sum of 10,000 euros.
