Record heat and blackout in Sicily: temperatures in the Catania area exceed 47 degrees.
#Catania
The meteorologists had predicted it: “Temperatures of 47 degrees Celsius will be reached in the Etna area.” And that’s exactly what happened on that scorching Sunday in Sicily, as the temperature reached 47 degrees Celsius in Motta Sant’Anastasia in the province of Catania, at 1 pm. At 3 pm, another record was set: Borgo Pietro Lupo, between Mineo and Ramacca, reached 47.1 degrees Celsius. This critical and constantly evolving situation in Sicily is being closely monitored by the regional civil protection agency. The province of Catania is the most affected, as the continuous and prolonged blackouts are causing serious difficulties for the population.
“All mayors have been contacted in order to verify and report any issues related to social and healthcare facilities, drinking water wells, families with elderly or children without water or electricity – first and foremost,” they explain. “Acoset and Sidra, the local water companies, had already reported problems with water supply in the area. The Soris, the Regional Operational Room, is closely monitoring the situation, and our volunteers are ready to intervene to assist needy families and the relevant authorities in maintaining normal conditions despite the intense heat.
Salvo Cocina, the head of the Sicilian civil protection, has also issued other recommendations to mayors in order to cope with this exceptional heatwave. Firstly, he suggests activating the COCs (Municipal Operational Centers) and preparing air-conditioned facilities to host, even during the hottest hours, vulnerable individuals who do not have air-conditioned homes (such as sports halls, conference halls, gyms, parts of supermarkets, council chambers, etc). Secondly, the civil protection agency asks mayors to activate volunteer associations to assist those in need, including providing transportation services to and from their homes. Furthermore, it is necessary to inform the public about the behavioral norms and the available facilities. It is recommended to avoid outdoor events during the hottest hours and, if possible, postpone them to the early morning or evening. Lastly, it is important to maintain contact with the operational structures for any emergencies and inform the civil protection agency about the activation of the COCs.
