The Carabinieri of Ragusa report that in the province there have been several attempted or consummated scams carried out by individuals posing as military police officers, lawyers, and emergency medical technicians. The modus operandi always follows a pattern: the scammer identifies a potential victim, usually an elderly person contacted by phone, often on a landline; at this point, a fake carabinieri marshal informs the victim of the arrest of a relative and proposes their release in exchange for money to be paid to a lawyer who will soon arrive at the victim’s home.
The scenarios can vary, and the scammers, like true actors, stage a car accident involving the family member, vehicle seizure, or the issuance of an administrative fine that requires payment to avoid legal action. Investigations are ongoing to identify the perpetrators of recent scams, some of which have resulted in hundreds of euros in illicit profits. The Carabinieri urge the public to be vigilant and to warn vulnerable individuals, stressing that “no carabinieri officer requests money for any reason.” They also advise that if one receives suspicious phone calls or visits at their home, they should contact the emergency number 112 for immediate assistance and guidance on how to thwart the scam attempt.
