Thousands of people gathered in Messina to protest against the construction of a bridge that will devastate the city and force many residents to leave their homes. The protests will continue even after the construction begins in July 2024. Gino Sturniolo, a representative of the No Bridge Network, stated that the bridge is not just a structure, but an army of construction vehicles that will affect the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. He also criticized the lack of regulations regarding the bridge project, such as the high salaries of managers. The protest was also supported by the Fisac Cgil union. Matteo Salvini, the leader of the Lega party, argued that the bridge will cost less than the income support program provided by the government.
