Prefect halts transfers from Lampedusa as chaos arises among migrants in Porto Empedocle tent.

The prefect of Agrigento, Filippo Romano, has halted transfers from the Lampedusa hotspot today (August 15). The hotspot currently houses 1,897 migrants. Yesterday, a total of 548 people were moved to Porto Empedocle using two ferries. However, there are still 1,269 migrants in the pre-identification area at the end of the port, which is only equipped to accommodate a few hundred people. After the disturbances last night, during which there were fears of a revolt, the prefect has decided to suspend transfers with the ferries. The first priority is to lighten the presence between the gazebos and the temporary structures in Porto Empedocle. Romano, after the provisional award to create an hotspot in Contrada Caos, Porto Empedocle, said that an early delivery of the construction site will be made to allow the company of Cammarata to carry out the first activities and order materials. The supply of materials has recently been problematic.
