Precious stolen artifacts sold on social media, recovered in Siracusa
The article explains how the Carabinieri of the cultural heritage protection section in Siracusa recovered valuable items that had been stolen from churches in the Diocese. The stolen items included a manuscript dated 1795 by Father Giuseppe Maria Capodieci, a thurible and a reliquary from the eighteenth century, and two confraternity maces from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The items were returned to the Archdiocese of Siracusa. The investigation was triggered by a social media post where the thief attempted to sell the items. After identifying the seller and conducting a search of his home, the Carabinieri found the stolen items. The man was reported and could not provide an explanation for possessing the stolen goods.
