Police raid in Catania seizes 400 kg of horse meat

Via del Plebiscito in Catania is a “must” for those who love horse meat, but at their own risk: the Carabinieri of the Nas have visited five grill restaurants, called “arrusti e mangia” in Sicilian slang. In one of these, they found over 400 kilograms of horse meat without traceability and in poor conservation. The meat was immediately seized and destroyed as it was deemed dangerous for consumer health. The same restaurant was also fined for occupying public land, with the simultaneous administrative seizure of the grill used to prepare the meat on the street. In another trattoria, 3 kilograms of beef were seized and destroyed for lack of traceability, and the owner was fined for this and for illegal occupation of public land. The same fines were issued for the owner of another restaurant, where 6 tables and 11 chairs were illegally placed on public land, as well as 24 packages of 200 grams of salmon for lack of traceability.
