Pension in Giarre lost at sea in the port of Riposto

Since 3 PM this afternoon, firefighters’ divers and a coast guard dinghy have been searching for Giovanni Cavallaro, a 73-year-old retiree from Giarre, in the commercial port of Riposto. Cavallaro parked his car at the entrance of the port around 10 AM this morning and reportedly headed towards the tip of the port. Surveillance cameras captured his images until the point where it is only accessible by foot, as the transit beyond that point is restricted due to the presence of large yachts owned by Arab emirs. The search efforts are still ongoing, with the involvement of firefighters, the coast guard, and the carabinieri. Cavallaro used to work as a driver for a road construction company. The sea is rough due to the ongoing windy conditions in the Etna’s Ionian side. The operation to find the man, considered “missing at sea,” involves the elite firefighting divers of Catania, the naval section of the firefighters, and the firefighting team in Riposto.
