From today, the Hall of Mirrors of Palazzo d’Orleans is dedicated to lawyer Maria Mattarella, the Secretary General of the Presidency of the Sicilian Region who passed away on September 9th. The naming ceremony was requested by Governor Renato Schifani to honor her memory on the thirtieth anniversary and took place this morning in a private manner, as requested by the family. Present were the President of the Region, the President Sergio Mattarella, Maria’s children Giovanni and Piersanti, her brother Bernardo, cousins, and a small group of friends and colleagues. “Maria Mattarella – Schifani emphasized – was a figure of great value for our Region, a woman of high professionalism and extraordinary humanity. Her memory will forever remain alive in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her and working with her. Naming the most important hall of the Palace after her, which has seen illustrious presidents like her father Piersanti, who was killed by the Mafia, is a sign of our recognition and immense gratitude.”
One of her most trusted collaborators, lawyer Mario Puglisi, also remembered the Secretary General. “Maria – he said emotionally in his speech – was one of the main reference points for the regional administration. From today, all of us have the duty and moral obligation to continue our work with renewed commitment, following her example and continuing in the path she traced and to uphold those values and principles to protect legality for which she fought so much in her lifetime, leaving a precious legacy for everyone.”
