Palermo, the puppeteer Mimmo Cuticchio takes the chair: free workshops

He did it in France, he did it in the United States, but never in Sicily. For the first time, the Palermo puppeteer Mimmo Cuticchio becomes a “professor” in four free workshops in as many treasures of the city, in collaboration with the Le Vie dei Tesori Foundation.

Four workshops each lasting three afternoons – from 15.30 to 18.30 – to meet Cuticchio, enter the secrets of the puppet opera, learn the rudiments of maneuvering and gestures.

An opportunity to get to know from the inside an extraordinary heritage of art, culture, tradition recognized by Unesco and to take the first steps in practice under the direct guidance of the head of the school.

«When I was young – says Mimmo Cuticchio, who is now 74 – in Palermo there were fifteen puppet theaters, people queued and anxiously awaited the developments of the plot of their favorite characters. After the crisis of the Sixties, with the abandonment of the historic center and the spread of TV, and after the rediscovery and re-evaluation of the puppet opera in the last twenty years, I like to think about planting the first seeds of this again. ancient art in which I was literally born, carried in swaddling clothes on the stage tables of my father’s theater, in Gela ».
Mimmo Cuticchio will guide the participants in a path of artistic creation – from the maneuver to the voice – and in these days he is at work in his laboratory in via Bara to prepare all the materials necessary for the workshops. She will do it by crossing the critical thought of the writer and pedagogist Gianni Rodari, reworking four of his tales, one for each place. The workshop is open to all adults, with a limit of twenty participants. But the workshops will also be able to accommodate audiences-spectators. At the end of each path, there will be a return to the public of the work done during the common path.
