Palermo protests against UN conference: “Antimafia heroes exploited”
A protest took place in Palermo against the government’s migration policies and the agreements signed during the 20th anniversary of the UN Convention on Organized Crime. The protesters criticized the agreements with countries like Libya, which they view as dictatorial and violent. The morning was marked by a summit attended by 34 countries, UN delegates, and Italian government officials. In the afternoon, dozens of labor unions, secular and religious associations gathered in protest. They criticized the “instrumentalization of anti-mafia symbols and heroes” and called attention to other pressing issues in Italy like education and healthcare. The protesters marched under the banner “You are the organized criminals” and reached a square close to the international gathering. They voiced concerns about agreements with Libya, which they believe encourage illegal migration due to the collaboration between the Libyan coast guard and traffickers. The protesters advocated for the freedom of movement for citizens worldwide.
