Palermo: Pope Francis’ visit to the house of Blessed Pino Puglisi, captured in a photo, causes controversy.

Unknown individuals vandalized and removed a photograph of Pope Francis during the 30th anniversary of the assassination of Father Pino Puglisi. The priest was killed by the mafia in the Brancaccio district of Palermo for his battle against organized crime. The photograph depicted the Pope’s visit to the museum dedicated to Blessed Giuseppe Puglisi, Father Puglisi’s uncle. The museum, which opened in 2019, is part of the house where the martyr lived and died. The incident occurred during a city council meeting held in the square on September 15, the anniversary of Father Puglisi’s murder. The council had previously announced plans to increase surveillance cameras in the area to prevent further acts of vandalism. Additionally, the municipal auditorium dedicated to the late Giuseppe Di Matteo, the son of a mafia collaborator who was kidnapped and brutally murdered, has not yet been reopened in the neighborhood. Father Puglisi had used the auditorium as a place of worship for two years.
