Palermo, no risk of pollution from the fire at the Bellolampo landfill.

#Palermo
Peaks of benzene and dust have been recorded during Tuesday and Wednesday, but “today the values are already well below the risk threshold,” stated the Arpa, referring to the ongoing fire at the Bellolampo landfill in Palermo. “Dioxin pollution is a data that can only be obtained scientifically after analysis lasting about 72 hours,” says the mayor of Palermo, Roberto Lagalla. “So, we hope to have the first results by tomorrow.”
“The combustion,” he continued at the end of the conference held today at the Prefecture, “continues in the fourth unused tank of the Bellolampo landfill, very close to the third tank where waste is deposited. For this reason, I have asked the Sicilian Region for concrete financial assistance, which promptly arrived, and for this, I thank President Schifani and the Regional Government for their attention and sensitivity. Today, with the technicians from the competent regional departments, the prefect of Palermo, and the firefighters, we have also addressed the issue of temporarily disposing of the city’s waste in an area that is still part of the landfill and will accommodate, with some precautions, the waste for the next 15 days, which is the time needed to lower the temperatures and resume the use of the regular tank. Furthermore, for this operation, we rely on the support of additional means, in addition to those already available to Rap, from the Military Engineering Corps and Esa, the Agricultural Development Agency of the Region, whom I thank.”
