A competition of ideas to design the redevelopment and destination of the former Partanna-Mondello cotton mill in Palermo.
The Musumeci government approved this, on the proposal of the President of the Region himself, to initiate a concrete action to recover an example of industrial archeology, a symbol of the development of the 1950s in Sicily, which has been left for too long in a condition of serious degradation.
On this occasion, this morning the governor wanted to carry out an inspection of the structure that has an area of over five thousand square meters, located in the northern area of the capital and unused for almost forty years.
Accompanying the president Musumeci were the general manager of the regional technical department Salvo Lizzio and the superintendent of cultural heritage of Palermo Selima Giuliano.
«A place rich in history and memory, which remained abandoned despite being a public good – highlighted Musumeci on the sidelines of the visit – for this reason we decided to recover it with a competition of ideas, open to all professional designers.
We want to give it back to the neighborhood and the city: the financial commitment will be significant, but we have a duty to work so that everything that already exists and has a value can be redeveloped and delivered to the territory, reducing the consumption of new land.
This is our goal ».
The old industrial complex, in operation from 1951 to 1986 and where hundreds of people worked, has great potential in a process of recovery and reuse.
The urban regeneration work would allow to safeguard the historical and social memory of the former Sicilian cotton mill, but also to return 5,500 square meters of warehouses to the community with another 10,000 square meters of surrounding land, following the happy fate of numerous other industrial structures.
converted into business incubators, socio-cultural centers, meeting places.
The competition of ideas will make it possible to acquire concrete proposals from technicians and experts on the future use of the former factory.
