Palermo council approves major budget change, opposition leaves room
Today (December 1st), the City Council of Palermo overcame the paralysis that had blocked it for three sessions and approved a major budget variation. However, the opposition did not participate in the vote and left the chamber. During the session, which began yesterday and ended late at night, the Council decided not to anticipate the vote on the motion for differentiated autonomy, which had divided the majority and paralyzed the work of Sala Martorana. The Council discussed a series of budget variations that free up administration spending thanks to surpluses. The twenty present majority councilors unanimously expressed their approval. Expressing dissent on behalf of all opposition, councilor Mariangela Di Gangi said, “You have fooled us, the opposition has never been and never will be the fool servant of this majority – said Di Gangi – on September 21st, in order to approve the budget, we had waived the discussion time with the commitment from the majority and the mayor that we would participate in the allocation of the 2022 surplus. We would have characterized it for the attention to the vulnerable in this city. But the commitment was not kept. The majority votes without even knowing the contents of this budget variation. For this reason, we are leaving the chamber.”
