Palermo commemorates 5 workers killed during World Cup stadium construction

Today, we remember the five workers who died during construction at the Renzo Barbera Stadium on August 30, 34 years ago. A wreath was placed in front of the memorial with the names of Antonino Cusimano, Serafino Tusa, Giovanni Carollo, Giuseppe Rosone, and Gaetano Palmeri. They died when a part of the stadium tribune collapsed during preparation for Italia ’90. The Fillea Cgil Palermo union called for continued focus on workplace safety and expressed concern over the high number of fatalities in Sicily. While the news of 29 new inspectors is welcome, it is not enough to address the ongoing irregularities and numerous sites and activities to monitor. The campaign #bastamortisullavoro (enough deaths at work) will restart, with the construction union advocating for greater safety and control, including at sporting events like football matches. The Fillea Cgil Palermo construction workers will wear special shirts during the Palermo-Potenza match on September 15. They are also working toward a national initiative involving all 20 teams in the Serie B championship. The local government affirmed its commitment to safe construction sites and collaboration with workers’ representatives. The president of Panormedil Cpt highlighted efforts to promote and educate about safety culture, aiming to strengthen security on construction sites and reduce workplace accidents.
