Green light from the Schifani government for the definitive project for the railway doubling of the Fiumetorto-Lercara section as part of the new Palermo-Catania high-speed connection. The positive opinion expressed by the junta, on the proposal of the Councilor for Infrastructures Alessandro Aricò, will allow the Italian railway network to be able to tender the work worth 1.860 billion euro by 31 December.
The works will cover approximately 30 kilometers and will concern a section which is shared by the Palermo-Catania and Palermo-Agrigento railway lines. The intervention includes, in particular, a first section on the north side of about 8 kilometers to the right of the Torto river, a tunnel, Alia, of about twenty kilometres, a final section on the south side of about 2 kilometers which reconnects to the current line at the station of Lercara.
«A strategic intervention for mobility on the island – explains regional councilor Aricò – which will allow for a more modern railway network, compared to the current one built at the end of the 19th century, as in the other Italian regions. A new route that will allow trains to be able to travel even at two hundred kilometers per hour, doubling the current speed”.
