Vincenzo Galatolo, the boss of the Arenella district in Palermo, died in the Opera prison in Milan, where he was being held under maximum security. He was 81 years old. A few months ago, the Court of Cassation confirmed his 30-year sentence for the Pizzolungo massacre in Erice, Trapani. In that attack, the mafia attempted to assassinate the magistrate Carlo Palermo, resulting in the deaths of Barbara Rizzo and her children, Giuseppe and Salvatore Asta. Galatolo was suffering from a terminal illness and had contracted pneumonia. His lawyers had requested his release due to medical reasons, but the request was denied.
