Fire and flames have been raging at Capo Gallo throughout the night, and the fire has still not been extinguished. Houses and homes were evacuated last night around 8 pm, but there is very little left to do now, as the nature reserve has been completely burned.
“All the houses were evacuated last night by the police, so currently we are displaced, staying at friends’ and relatives’ houses,” says Alessandro Cilano, owner of Ombelico del Mondo. “The fire is right on the edge of the houses, so we have clearly been secured, but we still need to go to sleep. Luckily, our establishment did not suffer any damages, although we remained closed last night, like almost all the establishments in Mondello. The upper part of Via Tolomea and the mountain underneath have been completely burned, which is why we were all evacuated. Now the Fire Department and the Civil Protection are in charge, as there is still fire and many flames. There is no improvement at all.”
“The whole mountain caught fire, and the rescue vehicles were not prompt because the fire started around 6:30 pm, and they arrived after a few hours,” reports Michele Scarfeo, owner of Costa Ponente. “Unfortunately, the flames spread right onto the road where the establishment is located, and they were actually entering, but fortunately my staff managed to contain the fire with the help of fire extinguishers and put it out themselves. We didn’t have major structural damage, but we are covered in ash, and the lawn has turned yellow, so the venue will have to remain closed for a few days. We were very scared; it was quite frightening, especially when the residents were evacuated. The mountain here is completely burned up to Motomar, there is nothing left.”
