Over 1600 Migrants Arrive in Lampedusa in One Day, Hotspot Overcrowded Again

In just over a day, a new wave of boats and small boats brought 1,609 people to Lampedusa. The hotspot is now full again with approximately 1,700 migrants after 230 left the island on a ferry to Porto Empedocle. 394 migrants arrived on six boats rescued by the Coast Guard, the Finance Guard, and a Swedish ship from the Frontex operation. Additionally, 169 people arrived on four different boats. Two small boats with 87 migrants were intercepted at sea, while another carrying 43 Sudanese managed to land at Cala Guitgia. 49 Senegalese, Gambians, Guineans, and Ivorians were transferred to the dock by the NGO Nadir’s ship. Another 238 people, including Tunisians, Eritreans, Syrians, Sudanese, Egyptians, Ethiopians, Nigerians, and Senegalese arrived on the island on six boats.
