Delegated by the Catania District Prosecutor's Office, the Carabinieri of the Investigative Unit of the Provincial Command of Catania this morning executed a precautionary custody order, issued by the Judge for the preliminary investigations of the Court of Catania, against 38 subjects, of which 13 in prison, 22 under house arrest and 3 of the obligation to submit to the P.G., to which the crimes of mafia-type association, association aimed at trafficking and drug dealing, illegal possession of weapons, fraudulent transfer of valuables and extortion with mafia method and purpose.

The investigation, called "Overtrade", conducted by the Catania Investigative Unit from December 2016 to the same month of 2018, through technical and dynamic activities, found in the statements of collaborators of justice, was launched in order to monitor the activities of the Mascalucia group and its associates in the aftermath of the release of Mazzaglia Salvatore and son-in-law Casesa Mirko, both leading figures in the family of Cosa Nostra from Catania Santapaola – Ercolano.

The complex investigations, focusing mainly on the two aforementioned criminal figures, have made it possible to ascertain not only their mafia membership (already sanctioned for the past by previous convictions) and a series of fine crimes such as mafia extortions (most not contested for the lack of collaboration of the victims), crimes relating to weapons and fictitious headings of goods, but also an impressive traffic of drugs of various types (cocaine, hashish and marijuana) which has as its central figure Mazzaglia Salvatore, to whom 18 counts are charged , and his criminal group consisting of his son Giovanni, his son-in-law Casesa Mirko, his grandson Mangano Victor and Nicosia Elena, with the task of maintaining contact with the buyers and deputy, together with the Mangano, to transport and deliver the narcotic.

The huge evidence acquired has allowed us to outline the versatility of Mazzaglia Salvatore who, thanks to his criminal pedigree, managed to make friends with representatives of organized crime from Calabria and with other mafia groups operating in the Etna area and in the other Sicilian provinces, with which it has activated various supply channels for the purchase of large quantities of drugs of various types (hashish, cocaine and marijuana). Precisely because of the criminal credit enjoyed, Mazzaglia was also able to obtain the supply of drugs on credit and at a more favorable price than that charged on the ordinary market, a price at which it then applied a price increase which constituted the gain relating to its brokerage. The Mazzaglia, in fact, did not manage any shop square in the territory, limiting itself to handling large quantities of drugs in favor of important buyers, who subsequently took care of their distribution to retailers.

The association also included Mazzaglia Giovanni, Salvatore's son, who flanked his father in the most relevant trades, including the supply of the narcotic in the province of Syracuse to the De Simone brothers and in the Province of Catania to the Vacante brothers (grandchildren of the best known Vacant Roberto currently detained and subjected to prison regime pursuant to art.41 bis Penal Ord.).

During the investigation, it was also possible to ascertain the extortion put in place by Mazzaglia Salvatore and his son-in-law Casesa Mirko to the detriment of a business of Nicolosi, and the fictitious attribution to Mazzaglia Agata (Casesa's wife) the ownership of a company for the marketing of dairy products and eggs (subject to seizure with today's precautionary order), in order to circumvent the legislation on prevention measures.

At the conclusion of the investigations, 46 charges were contested against 51 suspects.
