Oliva Giarraffa Fest, at Giuliana at the end of the year in the name of excellence

End of the year in the name of local excellence, in Giuliana, the beautiful village in the province of Palermo where the focus is on the consortium of local producers and the inclusion of the Giarraffa olive as a Slow Food presidium; the typical table olive, currently has a De.Co. (municipal denomination), certification of the agri-food sector which has the function of linking the product to the territory.

In fact, the Giarraffa olive is typical of the municipal area of Giuliana which it represents – according to the De.Co. of production and marketing – “an area where this cultivar expresses the best of its productive peculiarities”.

Fruit of a centuries-old tradition, evidenced by the presence of over 100-year-old olive trees, the cultivation of the Giarraffa olive involves the entire Giuliano area which participates with various companies in this third edition of the Giarraffa Olive Fest, after two years of forced stop due to the pandemic from Covid-19.

Promoted and organized by the Municipality of Giuliana, with the support of the Agriculture Department of the Sicily Region, from 27 to 30 December the Oliva Giarraffa Fest will be divided into a varied program with a wide range of typical products; the music of the concerts proposed by Palermo Classica in the halls of the evocative Castle of Federico II; and, still in the Castle of Federico II, the appreciated guided tours by the Visit Giuliana association.

There is a rich proposal for free tastings on 30 December: of course, the Giarraffa olive; the Tabisca, typical focaccia from Giuliano, organic lentils, local porchetta and many other delicacies. By popular demand after the success of “Giuliana in Festa – The return of the Sfincione Dolce” in early December, the Sfincione Dolce is back; a real treat for the palate, with its soft oven-baked dough and soft ricotta cream filling.

«The Oliva Giarraffa Fest – says the mayor of Giuliana, Francesco Scarpinato – is an opportunity to make this excellence of our territory known and appreciated by the widest possible public. The idea is also to involve the producers of the Giarraffa olive from Giuliano to form a consortium in order to be more competitive on the market and to start the product transformation processes directly on site, so as to allow a desirable economic impact in terms of jobs in the our municipality”.
