The personnel of Nictas and the mobile operational unit of the Carabinieri carried out a preventive seizure order of the sewage treatment plant in Noto (Siracusa) issued by the judge of the Court of Siracusa at the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Siracusa. The crime of negligent pollution of the Asinaro River in Noto was contested to the leaders of the in-house company Aspecon, which was entrusted with the management of the urban wastewater treatment activities of the Municipality of Noto and in particular of the Passo Abate purification plant, to the extraordinary commissioners called to manage the special company, and to the current mayor of Noto and his predecessor. The Prosecutor’s Office explained that “there is evidence of a compromise of the Asinaro River ecosystem resulting from the discharge of urban wastewater, partly discharged directly into the river and partly flowed after being released into the treatment plant.” The plant was found to be “lacking in purification capacity.” The seizure involved the sewage treatment plant, the individual discharge points, and the company Aspecon. The judge appointed a judicial administrator.
