Not only fires, but hundreds of houses in Palermo are also without electricity: the testimonies.
#Palermo
More than thirteen hours without electricity, forced to leave home in the middle of the night due to high temperatures. The account in the words of the residents of a building in Via Vincenzo Riolo – via Cavour area – in Palermo, where the drama of the fire is compounded by the damages caused by the lack of electricity and water: “At two in the morning, there were rumors of a restoration, people went out to the street until 3 am, but since last night we are still without light.” With 43 degrees on the thermometer, alternative solutions are sought and people go to sleep in mass at their relatives’ homes. “It was too hot in the house, we couldn’t stay. We were forced to leave in the middle of the night to my mother-in-law’s house. Today we came back to take out the stuff from the freezer and refrigerator, we are throwing everything away.”
But reports of malfunctions and voltage drops are coming from all over the city. “Yesterday we were without electricity all day – says Alessandra Forti, who lives near Piazza Sardegna, between Viale Lazio and Via Belgio – it was a nightmare last night. The light was going on and off, the circuit breaker was constantly switching on and off.” Now the light has returned to Alessandra’s home, but the continuous blackouts have damaged the air conditioners: “They went haywire. It’s very uncomfortable to die from the heat and not be able to open the windows because of the smoke.”
In Via Francesco Speciale (Cuba-Calatafimi area), some buildings have been without electricity and water since 7:30 pm yesterday. Among the residents, there are also two bedridden individuals who rely on respiratory machines that are not functioning due to the power outage. But the damages caused by the energy overload and the heat affect the entire city from the center to the suburbs. In the tribunal area, some residents complain about the lack of electricity since 11 pm yesterday. In Via Matteo Bonello (Papireto area), the power was out since the afternoon and was restored at 11 am today, after a long 16-hour outage.
The power was also out for a few hours during the night in Viale Lazio and the Stadio area. “Yesterday there was a blackout for three hours – explains Lorenzo Ganci, a computer engineer – as long as it goes out while I’m sleeping, I wake up because of the heat. But during the day, I have major inconveniences due to the voltage drops: without a connection, I cannot work.” Many commercial activities are facing difficulties. The bakery “Il grano D’Oro” (Calatafimi area) reports disruptions, especially yesterday. “It was chaotic – says Biagio Fortunato, one of the bakery employees – the light was going on and off, the ovens were turning off, the refrigerators were turning off, then on again. Like that all the time. Then around 8 pm, the light went off permanently. It came back at 4:30 am this morning, hopefully for good.”
Meanwhile, the Enel Group’s company announces the service interruption and explains: “The company promptly intervened on-site to restore the service with 350 technicians and with the help of 50 generators. The work of E-Distribuzione technicians will continue until the complete restoration of the electrical service.”
