New wave of bad weather in Sicily: schools closed in four cities

Orange alert and schools closed in some Sicilian municipalities. The risks for the new wave of bad weather are again very high. The Regional Civil Protection has published a notice for the weather-hydrogeological and hydraulic riskvalid until midnight today.

No school in Agrigento, Canicattì, Favara and Acireale.

In the bulletin, we read: “from the early hours of Saturday 26, for 24-36 hours, scattered to widespread rainfall is expected, of a shower or thunderstorm nature. The phenomena will be accompanied by showers of high intensity, electrical activity and strong gusts of wind”. From the afternoon, for 24-36 hours, “forecasts from strong to stormy winds mainly from the north or east. Storm surges along the exposed coasts”.

After the bulletin of the Civil Protection, in the Agrigento areaBesides the closure of schools, no visits to the deceased in city cemeteries. In the evening, the mayor of the capital Francesco Miccichè, who had already ordered the closure of the cemeteries, issued a new ordinance ordering the closure of the schools.

Around 11pm, an identical ordinance was also signed by the mayor of Favara Antonio Palumbo.

In Canicattì, the mayor Vincenzo Corbo after the orange alert issued by the Civil Protection issued a note with which it is recommended in the event of heavy rains to “avoid pedestrian and vehicular transit in areas historically subject to flooding”, to go out at home “only in cases of extreme necessity” and to pay “attention to further notices issued by the authorities also through national and local information”. In addition to schools, villas and public gardens, playgrounds, outdoor sports facilities and the cemetery and the use of all underground and basement rooms are banned for the whole day. Also ordered to stop all public and private events and outdoor commercial activities.

But bad weather isn’t just scaring Sicily. This morning, around 5, in Casamicciola Terme, on the island of Ischia, a landslide originated from the upper part of via Celario which reached the seafront in piazza Anna De Felice.
The landslide overwhelmed some parked cars dragging them to the sea. A man, overwhelmed by the mud, was recovered and rescued by rescuers. The man is conscious. Ischia’s Carabinieri, firefighters and civil protection are on site.
