New hotspot in Porto Empedocle: first to enter are 53 survivors from death

The Porto Empedocle hotspot – costing about three million euros – is ready to start operating. The 7 units of the facility, consisting of 4 housing units, will accommodate up to 280 people, with the capacity possibly increasing based on the flows. In late July, the announcement of the new hotspot was made, on August 14th the works were awarded to the company Tommasino Metalzinco from Cammarata, and the completion of the works was in January. At the end of January, a 6-month agreement was signed between the Agrigento prefecture and the provincial committee of the Red Cross, which will be in charge of reception services, healthcare and social assistance, as well as migrants’ integration. The meal distribution management will be outsourced. Meanwhile, the Sea Eye 4 ship has docked at the Porto Empedocle pier, rescuing 57 migrants in Maltese waters on Tuesday afternoon (three were taken to Lampedusa yesterday due to critical health conditions, and one was taken care of by Maltese authorities). Among the 53 rescued migrants, there were also two dead bodies found on the rescued boat. The non-EU migrants will be the first to be transferred to the new hotspot. Numerous police crews and Immigration officials from the Agrigento prefecture are present at the Porto Empedocle port.
