Neonate dies during crossing to Lampedusa, mother hospitalized in Palermo.

A newborn baby died of neonatal asphyxia on a small boat where his 20-year-old North African mother and 39 other people were traveling from Sfax. The mother was immediately taken to the Polyclinic in Lampedusa after disembarking and later transferred by helicopter to the Civic Hospital in Palermo. Medical staff discovered that the mother and baby were still connected by the umbilical cord, and the placenta had not been fully expelled, which required her transfer to the Obstetrics and Gynecology department. Despite being assisted by some women on the boat during childbirth, the baby made only a few cries before passing away.
