The Italian government is considering the use of mobile seawater desalination units to provide drinking water to the smaller islands that are not connected to the mainland water supply. Fixed desalination plants on land have faced protests from citizens due to the disposal of brine. Connecting the smaller islands to the electrical grid of Sicily is also being evaluated, with an estimated cost of 200-250 million euros. The Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, emphasized the need for Italy to prioritize overall energy production rather than focusing on regional imbalances. He highlighted the changing dynamics in the energy sector and the potential for development in the southern regions of the country, emphasizing the importance of believing in the potential of the entire nation. Pichetto also announced plans to include offshore wind farms in a forthcoming decree, involving the identification and development of designated areas. Collaboration with neighboring countries, the establishment of equipped ports, and the construction of platforms will be necessary for the successful implementation of offshore wind energy projects. The grid operator, Terna, predicts that 1.4 gigawatts of offshore wind energy production will be installed in Sicily by 2030, with numerous project proposals already received.
