Metropolitana di Catania, Filca Cisl concerned about delayed start of works
“We are concerned about the delay in starting work on two crucial lots of the Catania metro. These lots, contracted by the contracting station Ferrovia Circumetnea – MIT and assigned to the Consorzio Stabile Medil, are an integral part of a project that started decades ago and is essential for the completion of the city’s metro network,” said in a joint statement by the regional secretary of Filca Cisl Sicilia, Paolo D’Anca, and the provincial secretary of Filca Cisl of Catania, Pippo Famiano.
“The lots in question are the extension of the FCE railway network in the Catania metro line, from the Central FS station to the Airport. This lot, known as the “Stesicoro – Airport – Completion Lot,” has a cost of over 400 million euros and was awarded in July 2020 with the contract signed in July 2021 to the Consorzio Stabile Medil. The Second Lot for the enhancement and transformation of the FCE in the urban areas of Catania and Misterbianco and the sub-metropolitan line up to Paternò, includes the completion of the section between the “Nesima” station exit and the “Misterbianco Centro” station exit.
The cost of this lot is 120 million euros and was also awarded in August 2021 to the Consorzio Stabile Medil. It is necessary to immediately start a serious discussion to highlight the interferences that do not allow the two sections Monte Po-Misterbianco and Stesicoro-Airport to start. These works have been stalled for years and exceed over 500 million euros with already allocated resources. We have long asked FCE and the Medil company to commit to overcoming the critical issues, and we had hoped that in a few months, construction would start, but to date nothing has moved. The benefits that would result from the completion of these works are numerous. The enhancement of the territory of the Metropolitan City of Catania would have significant repercussions on GDP, an increase in value added, and an increase in employment. The realization of these infrastructures is essential to improve urban mobility, reduce traffic and pollution, and contribute to the economic recovery of the city and the surrounding areas.
This situation of stalemate concerns us greatly, as the metropolitan infrastructure is essential to improve urban mobility and incentivize the economic and employment recovery of the entire territory. We consider this silence unacceptable, as it risks compromising the realization of this fundamental work, and we ask to immediately establish a discussion table, involving all institutional subjects and relevant social parties. The goal – concludes the statement – is to understand the reasons behind the delay in starting work and to find concrete solutions to unblock the situation and ensure the continuation of a project essential for the future and progress of our territory and to avoid another unfinished project.”
