“Sometimes the memory dissolves and therefore must be accompanied by the memory. Memory is sacred and must be passed down from generation to generation ", so, this afternoon, the prefect of Trapani Tommaso Ricciardi, during the ceremony held at the Government Palace in memory of the victims of the sinkholes. Today on the "Day of Remembrance" – which has been celebrated on February 10 since 2004 – we remember the thousands of Italians who, between 1943 and 1945, were captured, killed and thrown into the karst cavities of Istria and Dalmatia by the hands of Yugoslav communist partisans of Marshal Tito.
According to Tito's supporters all the Italians were fascists or opposed to the communist regime and, therefore, those who lived in Istria and Dalmatia were thrown into the sinkholes.
