Carmelo Russo, the man who set fire to the dog Aron last January in via delle Croci in Palermo, causing his death, will no longer be able to “own, acquire in property or possess animals of any kind and species for any reason, even temporarily, throughout the municipal territory”. This was established today, on the proposal of the animal welfare assessor Fabrizio Ferrandelli, by Mayor Roberto Lagalla signing a special ordinance.
This also extends to any cohabitants of Russo; it will be the veterinary service of the Asp of Palermo and the municipal police who will periodically check compliance and provide for the seizure of any animals found.
According to Assessor Ferrandelli, “it was a necessary act in the context of a criminal and cowardly action that caused pain and death to a dog and that has shaken the local and national public opinion. This is also a confirmation of my attention and that of the entire administration to the welfare of animals that are and will always be an integral part of our community. Thanks to Mayor Lagalla for the sensitivity shown on the subject and to those associations that have been close to us, also urging the issuance of this rightful provision.”
