Matteo Messina Denaro had Covid when entering prison.

When arrested, the boss of Castelvetrano, Matteo Messina Denaro, had Covid-19. The commander of the Ros, Pasquale Angelosanto, revealed this during a meeting at the San Camillo hospital in Rome, where the contribution of the national healthcare system to the capture of the boss was discussed. Angelosanto explained that the boss had tested negative for Covid-19 in the hospital swab test, but positive in the one done before entering jail. The capture was possible thanks to health records found at the sister’s house during a surveillance operation, containing information about hospitalizations, operations, weight loss, and chemotherapy cycles. Investigators connected this information to a patient named Andrea Bonafede, who had the same age as Messina Denaro. It was discovered that Bonafede was not actually undergoing surgery when he was supposed to be, but was seen driving a car or using his cellphone. The investigation led to an appointment at a clinic on January 16th, where the arrest took place.
